Neuropsychological assessment

Clinical neuropsychological assessment is a specialized interest that involves the application of knowledge of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, pharmacology, cognition and psychology to assess and manage individuals who have suffered illness or injury to the brain. E.g. Stroke, dementia, brain tumour, traumatic brain injury, and memory difficulties of unknown origin. Neurocognitive problems resulting from illness or injury to the brain may have an impact on interpersonal relationships, ability to carry out activities of daily living, ability to work, and make decisions about finances, etc. A neuropsychological assessment investigates these difficulties and provides valuable information in order to assist with clarification of diagnoses, planning and monitoring of rehabilitation, and giving an opinion on legal matters (Road Accident Fund, curatorship, and disability claims, etc.)

A neuropsychological assessment considers all aspects of the brain’s functioning which can become impaired due to illness, injury or insult (physical assault). Comprehensive neuropsychological assessments are provided for the following:

  • Traumatic brain injury e.g. in car accidents
  • Memory difficulties
  • Attention and concentration difficulties
  • Dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases/conditions
  • Epilepsy
  • Stroke
  • Hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain)
    Personality changes

  • Assessment of the patient’s future care needs and chances of continuing with the same lifestyle and career.
    Assist with brain-related diagnoses.
    Plan and manage patient care.
  • Attain baseline scores against which to compare later functioning.
Evaluate treatment efficacy (e.g. the efficacy of medication on memory functions).
